Sports Activities

JMS high school has been able to boast an extensive array of extra-mural, cultural and sporting activities. Our sporting programme this year, like in the past has been an exciting and eventful one.

In the first term our focus has always been the swimming Gala and Athletics where JMS has always competed favorably in both the CHOPS and ISSSA calendars. Our Interhouse Athletics held at the new and immaculate Francistown stadium for the first time proved to be a memorable and successful event. The grand finale was the open boys relay event that certainly brought the house or houses down. What an amazing finish. JMS swimmers and athletes have always pitted themselves well, worthy contestants at the ISSSA and CHOPS competitions. Several records were broken this year in the CHOPS swimming gala and the ISSSA athletics, notably in the U16 and Open Boys Javelin. Lest we forget the close photo finish between Maru A Pula, Westwood and JMS in the final event at the ISSSA gala hosted by JMS. What exciting victories and close competitions we have experienced this year by all competing sportsmen and of course sportswomen. We pay tribute to all our teaching staff for coordinating their club meetings, and to our coaching staff for all their dedication and enthusiasm. Our JMS coaches and staff spend countless and extra hours training and coaching our athletes. Our successes in the interschool tournaments, in the pool, on the courts and field are largely attributed to all your endeavors and dedication and love for sport as a whole.

JMS continues to develop its club and cultural programme offering debate, chess, interact, quiz, marimbas, scripture union, Setswana, art and drama clubs to name a few. Our many sporting codes include swimming, athletics, cricket, squash, table tennis, tennis, badminton, basketball, indoor hokey, marathon running, girls’ soccer and volleyball.

As a school we embody the motto “The Best That I Can” and now realize that the sport has become an important way for healthy living and a healthy body is a healthy mind. We believe in a holistic education where sport is the center of it all when it comes to having an ‘all rounded’ education. Sport at JMS plays an ever-increasing part in the life of our learners as a school and as a nation at large. If our school teams and sports persons are doing well, it lifts us all as a school. Through greater knowledge and understanding of the ingredients of sporting excellence our performances on and off the field of play will certainly improve our abilities to achieve success at a later date.

At JMS we encourage sport not only as a form of good health, recreation, competition and for team building but we have also realize that sport is not becoming a major source of income and empowerment creation in the days after school. This has become an important and worldwide phenomenon. Achieving sporting scholarships to reputable academies, colleges and universities are now an important trend in attaining further education. We encourage those in their final years at school to take up sport in addition to their academic studies. This will further enhance their applications to places of higher learning. We continue to emphasize the role that sport has in our school and society and how it will assist social cohesion and tolerance in order to achieve goodwill. Our key message is to promote the benefits of physical exercise and sport, at the same time inspiring our learners to get active and discover new and hidden talents and new codes regardless of their ability and background.
